Reflexology

What is Reflexology?

Reflexology is a complementary therapy based on the belief that there are reflex areas in the feet and hands which are believed to correspond to all organs and parts of the body. By stimulating these reflexes we believe the body then responds by identifying imbalances within the body’s systems, rebalances and begins to heal. Reflexology works on an individual basis and may alleviate and improve symptoms such as everyday stress and tension.

Reflexology treatments are not just a simple foot or hand massage. If you have been under stress, ill or injured, or if you are suffering from a chronic condition your body will be in a state of imbalance. The vital energy pathways will be blocked and your body will be unable to function properly. Reflexology can be used to restore and maintain the body’s natural equilibrium and encourage healing. It helps you feel healthier and vibrant by unblocking the energy pathways.

What to expect

After discussions on your initial visit your medical history and lifestyle is noted and the treatment designed around your specific needs and goals. In some cases it may be necessary to obtain your doctor’s permission prior to starting treatment. (All client records are stored securely). For hand reflexology, you sit on a chair; reflexology on feet can be given with you sitting in chair or lying on the massage couch. Hands/feet are washed and dried prior to treatment. Soothing music plays and fragrant candles are used for relaxation. Treatment follows a prescribed pattern of actions on acupressure points designed to target your particular needs.

Age range

Reflexology can be safely used with people of all ages – from babies to the elderly.

Disorders treated

Reflexology treats the whole person, not just the symptoms of disease and it has been shown to be an effective treatment for a wide variety of conditions. Reflexology also improves the immune system and aids faster recovery from coughs and colds and other ailments. It acts as a complement to conventional medicine and treatment, and is the perfect way to relax, re-balance, harmonise and detox. Reflexology has helped with the following ailments:

  • arthritis
  • back pain
  • depression
  • digestive disorders
  • high/low blood pressure
  • hormonal imbalances, PMT
  • migraine
  • sleep disorders
  • sports injuries
  • stress-related conditions – and with many other aspects of mental and physical health.

Are there any side effects?

As with conventional western medicine Reflexology can produce side effects in some people but most of them are positive, it varies between individuals and of course according to the condition under treatment. You may feel a lot more energetic whereas others are tired, due to the body regaining balance and recovering from changes induced. You may feel worse rather than better after your first session, but give it time! A series of treatments is necessary to gain the full benefits, six over six weeks is generally recommended.

Aftercare

Following your session, you will be given water, continue drinking lots of water as this flushes out toxins. Wait 10 minutes before driving or operating machinery. Avoid alcohol and caffeine intake as they dehydrate the tissues and add toxin. Avoid strenuous exercise and do not eat a heavy meal, rest to allow your body time to rebalance. Comprehensive After-care information will be given and explained to you after your session.
