What is Swedish Massage?

There are five basic strokes recognised, duration and use of each is determined by your requirements. Effleurage consists of making long and gliding strokes along the body and is probably the most commonly used move. It helps you relax, reduces tension and stress levels and also increases circulation. Petrissage is a kneading technique which smooths out lumps in muscle tissue and eases muscle tension. Tapotement is rapid and repeated striking of the body like a drumming motion. Hands are formed in various shapes and make different sounds. such slapping, cupping and chopping. These are quite noisy strokes and also may hurt a little. Vibration – rhythmic and rapid shaking of the body, often applied to shoulders and neck. Pleasant sleep inducing sensation. Friction works on your muscles using various moves.Massage oil is commonly used.

What to expect

After discussions on your initial visit your medical history and lifestyle is noted and the treatment designed around your specific needs and goals. In some cases it may be necessary to obtain your doctor’s permission prior to starting treatment. All client records are stored securely. You will then be left to disrobe, lie on the massage couch and cover as appropriate with the towels provided (the therapist uncovers only the part of the body being worked on). Soothing music plays and fragrant candles are used for relaxation. A little massage oil or cream is applied then strokes are performed in a sequence determined by your particular needs. The type of massage strokes and amount of pressure applied is specific to each client’s needs, and varied accordingly.

Aftercare

Following your session, you will be given water,continue drinking lots of water as this flushes out toxins. Wait 10 minutes before driving or operating machinery. Avoid alcohol and caffeine intake as they dehydrate the tissues and add toxin. Avoid strenuous exercise and do not eat a heavy meal, rest to allow your body time to rebalance. Leave any essential oil blends on your skin for at least 8 hours before showering/bathing.
